In order to get the most out of your yoga practice, it's important to perform each pose correctly.

Practicing yoga on a regular basis is physically, emotionally and mentally beneficial in many different ways. In order to get the most out of your practice, it’s important that you perform each pose properly. Yoga can be tricky, and even the simplest poses can trip up the most experienced yogis every now and again. That’s why we’re focusing on a new pose each month. Today, we’ll be focusing on Tree Pose, also called Vakrasana.

What’s the purpose of Tree Pose?

All yoga poses, from easy poses, like Corpse poses, to the most challenging poses, like Crow Pose, can be beneficial for your health and emotional well-being, and Tree Pose is no exception. Here are a few of the benefits you’ll enjoy when you include Tree Pose in your yoga practice:

It enhances your sense of being grounded and secure. It improves balance. It lifts the chest to encourage healthy breathing patterns. It improves coordination. It enhances your ability to focus. It promotes calm and clear-headedness. It builds strength and flexibility. It opens up the hips.

How to get it right.

In order to enjoy the benefits we listed above, as well as the other benefits associated with Tree Pose, you need to perform it properly. If you slouch forward or lean against a wall, you simply won’t enjoy the same benefits as you would if you performed it properly. Here are a few tips to help you get Tree Pose right:

#1. Start with a strong foundation.

Every yoga pose starts with a strong foundation, and in Tree Pose, your foundation is your standing leg. Start in Mountain Pose, with your neck and spine long, and your belly pulled in and activated, and then shift your weight to your standing leg, while maintaining Mountain Pose. This will help to keep the “trunk of your tree” steady, which will improve your balance.

#2. Keep your standing leg slightly bent.

In order to balance properly, you are going to need to be able to make tiny adjustments in your standing leg. There are over 100 muscles, ligaments and tendons in the foot, as well as 26 bones, and micromovements help to synchronize all of them for better balance. If your leg is hyperextended or locked into place, it makes it impossible to make those tiny adjustments, which hinders your balance.

Whether you’re practicing Tree Pose or any other yoga pose, if you want to make the most out of your practice, you need to do it right.
